Following his studies at the University of Huddersfield, Stephen had private lessons with Markus Stockhausen in Cologne and William Forman in Berlin. He was resident at the Banff Centre for the Arts in 2002, and since then has played in Festivals in the USA and Europe with ensembles such as ensemble Courage (Dresden), ensemble Linea (Strasbourg) und Klangforum Wien. He plays with the percussionist, Lee Ferguson as duo Contour and is also a member of ensemble Chronophonie (Freiburg). Since 2000 he has worked with the composer, Donald Bousted on a microtonal trumpet project which is documented at www.microtonaltrumpet.com and has led to the development of ‚kits’ which convert his trumpets into 19-division and 24- division (quarter-tone) instruments.
